Abstract
Aim. The study aimed to expand the genetic diversity of the guar collection by incorporating new accessions, conducting a comprehensive evaluation under irrigation, and selecting promising genotypes based on multi-year observations for subsequent use in breeding programs.
Results and Discussion. The results of evaluating introduced guar accessions obtained from the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine are presented. Based on maturity traits, all investigated accessions were classified as medium-ripening but differed within the classification scale; specifically, accessions 'Maharandi' and 'Sheetal' scored 5 points (121-130 days), whereas 'Pusa Naubahar', 'Haldi bhati', and 'Tindal' scored 6 points (131-140 days). Correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between total seed yield and fresh biomass weight (r = 0.898; R2 = 0.806), indicating that biomass is a highly informative predictor of productivity. Seed weight per plant exhibited a slightly lower predictive capacity (r = 0.692; R2 = 0.479) but maintained a stable, positive correlation with yield. Basal stem diameter also demonstrated high informativeness as a productivity indicator (r = 0.899; R2 = 0.808), whereas stem diameter at the midpoint showed only a moderate correlation. The correlation coefficient (r = 0.968) and coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.937) indicated an exceptionally close relationship between the number of seeds per plant and overall yield. A similar relationship was observed between the number of pods and yield (r = 0.839; R2 = 0.703). Based on a complex of economically valuable agronomic traits, the promising guar accessions 'Haldi bhati' and 'Pusa Naubahar' were identified.
Conclusions. Based on a comprehensive evaluation of collection accessions under irrigation, promising genotypes suitable for further breeding were identified. These genotypes are recommended for developing new varieties adapted to irrigated soils and climate of the Southern Steppe.
