Section
Abstract
Aim. Based on the results of studying the global flax gene pool, to identify sources of enhanced drought tolerance for the northeastern mixed forest zone of Ukraine and to form a trait-specific collection for drought tolerance.
Results and Discussion. Based on the synthesis and systematization of the results of flax gene pool studies conducted at the Institute of Bast Crops of NAAS in 2016–2024, a trait-specific collection of common flax for drought tolerance was formed based on economically valuable traits. The collection comprises 177 accessions representing one botanical species and two botanical varieties from 16 countries worldwide. The accessions were differentiated according to 12 traits and 58 levels of their expression: drought tolerance, resistance to fusarium wilt, resistance to anthracnose, lodging resistance, thousand-seed weight, total plant height, maturity group, straw yield, seed yield, fiber yield, total fiber content, and long fiber content. Based on the results of long-term studies of the flax collection accessions, reference cultivars were identified, and sources of high and very high expression of economically valuable traits were selected, particularly for drought tolerance: 'Hlazur' (UF0401698), 'M 38' (UF0401834), 'LKS 3' (UF0402113), 'LKS 15' (UF0402198), 'Oberih' (UF0402254), 'Lvivskyi 7' (UF0401391), and 'Ivanivskyi' (UF0402230) from Ukraine; 'Leto' (UF0402110) and 'Start' (UF0402082) from Belarus; 'No. 431' (UF0401346) from Russia; 'Angora' (UF0402310), 'Cristalin' (UF0402311), and 'Progress' (UF0402313) from France; and 'Krajovy Oberlan I' (UF0401571) from the Czech Republic.
The collection of common flax for drought tolerance is registered with the National Center for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine (Certificate No. 340, dated January 29, 2025) and can be used in breeding to develop new high-yielding, drought-tolerant flax cultivars.
Conclusions. Based on the assessments, reference cultivars were identified, and common flax sources with high and very high expression levels of valuable agronomic traits, particularly drought tolerance, were selected: 'Hlazur', 'M 38', 'LKS 3', 'LKS 15', 'Oberih', 'Lvivskyi 7', 'Ivanivskyi' from Ukraine; 'Angora', 'Cristalin', 'Progress' from France; 'Leto', 'Start' from Belarus; 'No. 431' from Russia; and 'Krajovy Oberlan I' from the Czech Republic. A trait-specific collection of common flax for drought tolerance was formed (Certificate No. 340, dated January 29, 2025), comprising 177 accessions from 16 countries worldwide, reflecting their genetic diversity across 12 traits and 58 levels of their expression: drought tolerance, disease resistance, lodging resistance, thousand-seed weight, total plant height, maturity group, straw yield, seed yield, fiber yield, total fiber content, and long fiber content.
