Section

Abstract

Aim. Developing and improving the methodology for managing the potato gene pool are key to its effective utilization. One approach to achieve this goal is establishing various types of training collections, given that high-quality training of specialists in plant genetic resources enhances the overall efficiency of gene pool management.

Results and Discussion. Principles for forming training potato collections aligned with educational curricula have been determined, serving as visual aids for disciplines such as plant genetic resources, plant breeding, botany, genetics, and several other biological specialties. The methodological foundations for forming different types of training collections representing the genetic diversity of potatoes within the section Tuberarium (Dun.) Buk. of the genus Solanum L. are presented. Specifically, this includes clustering accessions by phenotypic variability of individual traits or their combinations, which demonstrate morphological polymorphism. Examples of forming various types of training collections are provided, encompassing the botanical diversity of plants, ecomorphotypes, sets of different cultivar types, and sources of valuable traits. The core of these methodological approaches to collection forming is the principle of maximizing the representativeness of the crop's genetic diversity.

Conclusions. The efficiency of genebanks directly depends on the quality of training provided to plant genetic resources specialists by higher and secondary specialized educational institutions. Training collections are supposed to facilitate deeper knowledge of cultivated plants and their crop wild relatives, particularly potatoes, as biological objects. This approach fosters a better understanding of their evolutionary pathways, taxonomy, genetics, morphology, and breeding value, ultimately leading to more productive practical utilization of the potato gene pool in Ukraine.
