Abstract

Aim. To identify new sources and references of various levels of resistance to pathogens to systematize the new gene pool of winter rye, to form of a trait collection, and to select genotypes with the greatest breeding value in terms of several economic characteristics.

Results and Discussion. Having summarized and systematized the results on the genetic diversity of winter rye, we formed a trait collection of winter rye for resistance to pathogens (Certificate No. 327 dated 12.20.2023), which consists of 60 accessions from seven countries worldwide and reflects their diversity by 21 traits and 107 levels of their expression. The traits include resistance to pathogens, lodging resistance, yield, etc. Domestic cultivars are most widely presented (38 accessions). There are six accessions from Belarus and 16 from other countries. By biological status, 48 accessions are cultivars; ten – breeding lines, and two – synthetic populations. All accessions belong to the same botanical genus (Secale), species (Secale cereale L.), and variety (vulgare Koern). We selected one cultivar (cv. ‘Khlibne’ bred in Ukraine) because it combined high resistance to the pathogens of snow mold, brown stripe, and stem rust with high frost tolerance (9 points, critical freezing temperature -19.0°C).

Conclusions. Two genotypes with the highest breeding value were identified, specifically ‘Fraktalne’ (Ukraine) and ‘Zakhyst’ (Kazakhstan), which were distinguished by a combination of high group resistance to biotic factors, lodging resistance, high thousand kernel weight, and high yield (117% and 125% related to the check cultivar, respectively). The selected sources are valuable starting materials to breed promising cultivars. The winter rye collection formed by resistance to pathogens is a valuable starting material and a basis to create new highly productive and promising cultivars and hybrids with a set of valuable economic characteristics.
