COLLECTION FORMATION AND USE

Abstract

Aim In accordance with the decision of the International Association of Botanical Gardens, one of the ways of conservation is the introduction of endemics, relicts, and rare and endangered species in botanical gardens, studying their ecological and biological peculiarities, based on which the development of primary agricultural mechanisms of growing them should be made with the aim of replenishing these species’ numbers in the future in their natural habitats, as well as their implementation into the wide (industrial) culture as useful plants of diverse purposes.

Results and Discussion. The rare species collection of Kremenets Botanical Garden includes 156 species, out of which 4 are forms, 112 generations and 48 families. The sozological analysis of the collection shows that among them, 74 species belong to the Red Book of Ukraine, 56 – to the regionally rare species, 7 – to the CITES list, 12 – to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species, 8 – to the Bern Convention List, 6 – to the European Red List, 21 – to endemics, 23 – to relicts. Ternopil region plants growing in the collection of Kremenets Botanical Garden enumerate: 37 species – the Red Book of Ukraine, which constitutes 34.26% of the total number of rare species in the region, 56 species – regionally rare species (50%).

The analysis has indicated that the most numerously represented families are Asteraceae - 14 species and Ranunculaceae – 13 species each. The collection is prevalently composed of: hemicryptophytes and geophytes – 83 and 50 species, respectively, hydrophytes – Tofieldia calyculata (L.) Wahlenb, mesophytes – 57 species, xero-mesophytes – 34, xerophytes – 25 species.  All plants in the collection are scientifically valuable. In the economic sense, decorative plants prevail.

Conclusions The establishment of a rare species collection serves as a basis for further research in the sphere of nature conservation, preservation of rare and endangered plants’ gene pool, introduction and acclimatization of plants, as well as educational endeavors in the spheres of ecology and plant use.
