Abstract
Goal. The goal of this study was to investigate inbred corn lines on a set of valuable economic features and to select accessions by cob length for forming a collection by this trait. Results and Discussion. The investigation was carried out in the Laboratory of Corn Breeding and Seed Production of the Plant Production institute nd. A V.Ya. Yuryev of NAAS in 2005-2012. To form a collection, 86 corn accessions with medium (15-16 cm), long (17-18 cm) and very long (19 22 cm) cobs as well as with high resistance (9 points) to boil smut agents were selected. Lines were evaluated for the growing season length, morphological traits, productivity and its components. To determine the productivity level and its components (cob length, 1000-grain weight, grain row number, grain number per cob), reference lines, which are typical representatives of certain levels of traits, were selected. The study of inbred corn lines determined that 5 accessions belonged to the mid-early (ME) group, 61 accessions - to the mid-ripening (MR) group, and 20 accessions - to the mid-late (ML) group of ripeness. Eighty six corn lines were categorized in value classes within ripeness groups, depending on productivity and cob length. In each group, 4 classes of lines were distinguished: class I - with a very long or long cob and low or medium productivity; class II - with a very long or long cob and medium or high productivity; class III - with medium cob and low or medium productivity; class IV - with medium cob and medium or high productivity. As a result of this categorization of lines according to their value, we identified high-yielding accessions with long cobs: UKhS 100 (ME); Kharkivska 634, Kharkivska 805, Ukh 131, UKhS 99, Ukh 878 (MR), and Kharkivska 215 ZM, UKhS 54, UKhL 226 (ML).Conclusions. We proved the efficiency of differentiation of self-pollinated corn lines in value classes by cob length and productivity and distinguished sources of valuable economic features. Basing on the results of the research in 2005-2012, we formed the collection of self-pollinated corn lines by cob length and registered it with the NCPGRU of the Plant Production Institute nd. a VYa Yuryev of NAAS (certificate 200 dd 04.12.2015).
