COLLECTION FORMATION AND USE

Abstract

In the paper the results of work on forming the educational collection of millet and rare spread millet forms as foxtail, mohar, barnyard and african millet in the Plant Production Institute nd.a. V. Ya. Yuriev are shown. The collection consists of the samples taken from the main gene pool within the crop. The educational collection includes 20 samples of millet presenting different varieties, as well as, rarely spread millet-like fork is (2 varieties of foxtail, 1 of mohar, 2 of barnyard, one sample of african millet). In accord with the results of many-year studies of the national collection of millet some sources of economic traits with a different level of their manifestation are revealed. Millet breeding history is shown in which the both local and commercial varieties have been widespread or been characterized by breeding achievements in solving definite problems. The educational collection has included 113 specimens from 19 foreign countries demonstrating the diversity and special features of the varieties and forms of common millet and rare spread millet-like crops as foxtail, mohar, barnyard and african millet. This collection has been listed in Collection Register at the Ukrainian national centre for plant genetic resources (Certificate No. 86 of 2.11.2010).
