Abstract
Aim. To screen a Solanum andigenum Juz. et Buk collection for the expression of economically valuable traits and to identify sources of high performance, its constituents, and starch content in tubers.
Results and Discussion. One hundred and eleven Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum (Juz. & Bukasov) Hawkes accessions of the potato gene pool collection of the Institute of Potato Growing of NAAS were evaluated for performance and its constituents as well as for starch content in tubers. Of the investigated material, forms performing better than reference varieties were identified. Accessions ‘Uk 251-111 (UM0102409)’, ‘Uk 251-47 (UM0102369)’, ‘Uk 251-141 (UM0102431)’, ‘Uk 251-140 (UM0102430)’, ‘P1/27 (UM0102435)’, ‘A 8-2424 (UM0102436)’, and ‘Uk 251-56 (UM01023446)’ are promising for this trait-oriented hybridization. In addition, accessions with strong expression of such performance constituents as the number of tubers per bush and the average marketable tuber weight were identified. The average marketable tuber weight in accessions ‘Uk 251-47 (UM0102369)’ and ‘Uk 251-16 (UM0102351)’ was 110.7 g and 233.3 g, respectively. Thus, these forms can be recommended for hybridization to saturate backcrosses of multispecies hybrids and interspecies hybrids with useful traits. The proportion of high-starch forms (starch content in tubers > 22 %) in the S. andigenum species collection was 13 %. Accessions with high starch content in tubers, especially in combination with increased performance, are valuable for practical breeding.
Conclusions. Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigenum (Juz. & Bukasov) Hawkes accessions of the potato gene pool collection, which were grown in the Ukrainian woodlands, were evaluated for the major economically valuable characteristics. Sources of economically valuable characteristics, which are recommended to involve in practical breeding to create initial materials, were identified.
