INTRODUCTION

Abstract

Goal. Collection of local wild and cultivated plant gene pool samples adapted to the conditions of Ukrainian Steppe for following selection from them a samples valuable on economic and biological traits, use in breeding and research programs and conservation in the collections of the National Plant Genebank of the Ukraine.

Results and discussion. The results of the expedition to collect samples of genetic resources of cultivated and wild plants in southern and central steppe regions of Ukraine carried out in 2014 are presented. 48 localities situated in Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions were explored. Locations of gene pool samples of a number of cereals, legumes, medicinal, oil, vegetable crops are identified. There were collected 286 samples belonging to 117 plant species from which 68 are cultivated and 218 are wild. Among the collected material, samples of onion, spring garlic, grasspea, chickpea, lentil, Phaseolus beans; zucchini, vegetable beans with white seeds, beet, lettuce arugula, leaf parsley, fennel, potatoes, medicinal herbs - monarda, heart motherwort, lovage, garden marjoram, peppermint, lemon balm, thyme dimorphic, savory, plantain, medicinal chamomile, hyssop and other plants are of interest. The collected samples were transferred to institutions of the System of plant genetic resources of Ukraine which maintain collections of relevant crops for evaluation on economic and biological characteristics and to determine advisability of including them in to the national collections.

Conclusions. Southern and central Steppe regions of Ukraine were explored. 286 samples of 117 plant species, of which 68 are cultivated and 218 wild, were collected. It is advisable to continue exploring of the region, encompassing other towns and attracting a wider variety of species.
