INTRODUCTION

Abstract

The article presents the results of an international expedition under the supervi­sion of N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Industry (VIR) to collect samples of wild-growing legumes and forage crops that are valuable for breeding for adaptability and resistance to adverse environmental factors. Participants of the expe­dition – scientists of VIR (Russia), the Ustimivka Research Station for Plant Industry (Ukraine). Surveyed in Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions of the republic of Karelia. Collection samples held in 40 locations. Route length – 5900 km. The climate – continental, continental rises sharply to the east. Aboriginal vegetation – spruce, Scotch pine pine, occasionally fir, Siberian stone pine and larch. The main part of the charges made on the upland meadows - from arid watershed and mesophilic meadows on river terraces to the present floodplain meadows. Studied area is a broad plain with a weakly inclined to the White and Barents Seas, where plain alternating with residual morainic hills. A significant part of duties carried out in the river valleys Sukhona, Northern Dvina, Onega. In total 167 samples were col­lected: forage grasses (hedgehog, fescue, timothy, bluegrass, bent grass, brome grass, foxtail, reed canary grass, etc.) – 71; forage legumes (clover, alfalfa, bird’s foot trefoil, sainfoin, milk-vetch, goat's grass) – 29; legumes (vetch, vetchling, lupine) – 23; corn crops – 12; tubers (potatoes) – 12; technical crops – 1 (flax), ornamental crops – 19. Samples of wild perennial forage crops and leguminous plants, collected in the North-East of European Russia are characterized by high productivity and complex adaptive traits to unfavorable environmental conditions (cold resistance, resistance to rot, resistance to acid soils, aluminum, etc.). Assembled collection material is divided between the two partner parties.
