COLLECTION FORMATION AND USE

Abstract

Goal. To study morpho-biological and economic parameters of millet accessions from different countries during cultivation in the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine; to select valuable sources for formation of a working collection of grain, mowing and grain-mowing millet. Results and discussion. Collection millet accessions were studied under the field and laboratory conditions, which allowed us to comprehensively evaluate and identify sources of valuable economic features. Based on our results, a working collection of millet of defferent uses was formed. The collection includes 90 accessions originating from 16 countries. Accessions belonging to varieties aureum Alef (31 accessions, 34%), flavum Korn. (16 accessions, 18%) and coccineum Sir. (9 accessions, 10%) are the most multitudinary. The collection includes characterization of the accessions by 11 traits and 50 levels of their expression. According to the classifier, all the studied material was divided into 3 groups: grain, mowing and grain-mowing (universal) use. Grain group I includes 27 accessions, which are noticeable for early ripening, low yield of green mass, medium height of plants, medium number of internodes, elongated panicles, increased grain weight per panicle and increased 1000-grain weight. The group of accessions, which are recommended to use as sources of mowing features, consists of 19 accessions. These accessions differ by increased height of plants (up to 160 cm) and number of internodes (7 - 8 internodes), which allows to obtain a yield of green mass of 23.7 t/ha. Mowing millet accessions give increased yields of green mass, but lower grain yields due to incomplete ripening of grain in panicles of some accessions in the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. We categorized 44 accessions as grain-mowing ones. These accessions combine characteristics both of grain and of mowing millet cultivars and lines. They give high yields of grain and green mass. As a result of our study, millet accessions – references, which are characterized by high stability and low variability of major economic features in the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, were identified. Analysis of economic features of 90 millet accessions under contrasting weather conditions allowed us to formulate models of starting material for creation of cultivars of different uses.Conclusions. As a result of our study, we have formed the working collection of millet, which represents three uses - grain, mowing and grain-mowing (universal). We identified millet accessions – references of different uses that, under the conditions of the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, are characterized by stability and low variability of valuable economic features: grain accessions - Yuvileine (UC0206189), Skhidne (UC0205033), Kharkovskoye 57 (UC0200084); mowing accessions - UC0201141 and UC0201143 from China and Mestnoye "Terek" UC0200979; grain-mowing accessions - Askoldo (UC0206219), Olitan (UC0206181), Sp-1950 (UC0205276). Models of starting material were formulated for different uses: grain (short-season, large-seeded, technology-packed); mowing (late-ripening, tall, resistant to abiotic factors); grain-mowing (mid-ripening, with high yields of grain and green mass).
