INTRODUCTION

Abstract

Goal. To collect local cultivated and wild accessions of the plant gene pool adapted to the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine conditions and to further select from the collected accessions those with valuable economical and biological traits, to involve the selected accessions in breeding and research programs and to preserve them in collections of the National Plant Gene Bank of Ukraine.Materials and methods. The study material –local accessions of grain legumes, cereals, medicinal plants, vegetables, melons and spice crop, wild fodder legumes, Poaceae grasses and other valuable accessions collected during the collecting missions. The method was collecting missionResults and discussion. One hundred and nineteen areals located mainly in the Poltavska and Cherkaska regions were investigated, and the gene pool accessions (seeds and planting material) were collected. Twelve promising objects were chosen for monitoring of the condition of cenopopulations of valuable and rare genotypes of fodder and medicinal plants, their thorough study, preservation and reproduction. Seven hundred and two accessions of cultivated plants and wild relatives belonging to 190 plant species were collected, of which 62 are cultivated and 128 are wild. One hundred and eighty two herbarium specimens belonging to 72 species were collected. 182 herbarium sheets belonging to 72 species were collected.The collected new accessions of species, varieties and forms are characterized by adaptability to stress environmental factors and resistance to biotic factors, which will allow us to form the necessary basis for introductory, breeding, biotechnological, and phytochemical investigations. They will provide expansion of the genetic diversity of existing collections of genetic resources of field, medicinal and other crops and creation of new ones. A number of valuable local accessions of onion, tomato, pumpkin, dill, peppermint, various forms of bean, old varieties of corn, medicinal plants - oregano, St. John's wort, mint, motherwort, plantain, althea, primula, mullein, veronica, sage, thyme, betony, and other plants were collected. The collected accessions were transferred to institutions of the Plant Genetic Resources System of Ukraine, which maintain collections of corresponding crops, to evaluate them for economic and biological traits and to determine the expediency of their inclusion in national collections.Conclusions. 702 samples of the gene pool of cultivated plants and wild-growing native forms, related to 190 plant species were collected. They will contribute to the widening of the genetic base of existing and creation of new collections of genetic resources of the field, medicinal and other crops for use in breeding, scientific and other programs. The results of the expeditions indicate the effectiveness of continuation of expeditionary investigations and collection of gene pool samples in the region.
