COLLECTION FORMATION AND USE

Abstract

Goal. To establish variability of the collection sunflower material by expression levels of valuable economic characteristics, to select large-seeded varieties with well-balanced contents of protein and oil, to form a working collection.

Results and Discussion. Basing on the results of multi-year trials (2000-2014), we characterized 209 sunflower varieties - populations of the world gene pool by protein and oil contents in seeds, fatty acid composition as well as by valuable economic features (performance, 1000-grain weight and huskness). The collection was differentiated by 44 reference accessions, which reflect 11 traits with 55 expressions levels according to gradation scales of the classifier. On their basis, a working trait collection of sunflower varieties was formed. The geographical diversity of the trait collection in terms of protein and oil contents in sunflower seeds is represented by varieties - populations from 17 countries. The majority of accessions in the trait collection consists of Russian (102) and Ukrainian (36) varieties; accessions from other countries are in fewer numbers; these are varieties from Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Germany, Austria, France, Cuba, the United States, and Canada.

Conclusions. The working trait collection was formed; 90 valuable sources of high protein and oil contents as well as desirable fatty acid composition in sunflower seeds were identified. They will be used in breeding programs to create hybrids for different purposes.
