Abstract

Goal. Selection of valuable for breeding starting material of corn by resistance to major diseases in the Transcarpathian conditions, identification of sources of individual and group resistance to diseases and formation, on their basis, of a trait collection.Results and Discussion. Based on the research results over the period of2013-2015, a trait collection of self-pollinated corn lines bred at Transcarpathian State Agricultural Experiment Station was formed by resistance to major diseases in the conditions of Transcarpathia. The collection contains 94 accessions. We determined levels of resistance of the test accessions to the most harmful in Transcarpathia diseases of corn: stem and root rots (Fusarium moniliforme J. Sheld), northern helminthosporiosis (Setosphaeria turcica (Luttr) KJ Leonard & Suggs.), head and boil smuts (Sphacelotheca reiliana (Kuhn ) GP Clinton, Ustilago zeae (Beckm.) Unger).On provocative infectious background, for the first time, 16 reference accessions for various levels of affection of plants by major diseases were distinguished; sources of individual and group resistance to corn diseases were found. The following lines were adopted in Transcarpathia as reference accessions of various affection of corn plants by stem and root rots: 9 points – line ZK 24, 7 points – ZK 235/8, 5 points – ZK 290, 3 points – ZK 310, 1 point – ZU 51/4; by northern helminthosporiosis: 9 points – ZK 24, 7 points – ZK 289, 5 points – ZK 292, 3 points – ZK 287, 1 point – ZK 238/2; by head smut: 9 points – ZK 345, 7 points – ZK 328, 5 points – ZK 25/1; by boil smut: 9 points: ZK 146, 7 points – ZK 278, 5 points – ZK 327.Of 94 self-pollinated lines, 32 accessions (34.0% of the total number of accessions) with high resistance to stem and root rots were selected; their affection was below 10%. These accessions were defined as resistance to stem and root rots. The group with 7-point resistance comprised 19 resistant accessions (20.2%); their affection was  20%. There were 31 mid-resistant accessions (33.0%) with affection of  30%. The susceptible group included 11 accessions (11.7%) with affection of  40%, and one line (1.1%) was highly susceptible to pathogens - its affection exceeded 40%. Investigating resistance to northern helminthosporiosis of corn, we selected the nine most valuable accessions - sources of high resistance, which made up 9.6% of the total number of accessions. Twenty two (23.4%) accessions were resistant, their affection score was 0.1 points. Mid-resistant accessions were the most numerous: 52 accessions (55.3%) with the northern helminthosporiosis affection score of 1 point. The numbers of susceptible and highly susceptible lines were 9.6% and 2.1%, respectively; the northern helminthosporiosis affection score amounted to 2 or 3 points in these accessions. Most of the test accessions were resistant or highly resistant to head and boil smuts.Accessions of starting material combining resistance to several diseases are of the greatest value for breeding. Our study identified high-yielding sources of group resistance to 2-4 diseases. Highly resistant to pathogens of stem and root rot and smut diseases were 24 samples (25.5% of the total number of collection samples); among them, ZK 146 (UB0105191), ZU 86/6 (UB0100265), ZKM 200 (UB0104540), ZK 309/1 (UB0111097) and others. The group of high resistance to northern helminthosporiosis and smuts included four accessions with performance of 73 - 104 g/plant, namely: ZK 296 (UB0111069), ZK 300 (UB0111002), ZU 85/3 (UB0104565), and ZK 349 (UB0111049). Accessions ZK 351 (UB0111051), ZK 301/1 (UB0111062), ZK 312/1 (UB0111048), ZK 24 (UB0104505) with performance of 57 - 90 g/plant and various ripening time were highly resistant to four diseases - stem and root rots, northern helminthosporiosis, head and boil smuts.ФОРМУВАННЯ ТА ВИКОРИСТАННЯ КОЛЕКЦІЙISSN 2309-7345. Starting material of the trait collection of corn by resistance to the major disdiseases in the conditions of Transcarpathia is included in the National Bank of Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine, and plant breeders are invited to use it when developing resistant hybrids.
