Abstract

Goal. Study of groat spring barley varieties for a set of valuable economic features. Selection of the most promising breeding material, which can be recommended as parents in breeding programs to create high-yielding barley with high protein content and high 1000-grain weight.Results and Discussion. The article presents results of the 4-year study of economic features in 160 spring barley accessions originating from 13 countries. Генетичні ресурси рослин. 2016. № 1840with high levels of productivity, lodging resistance, resistance to diseases, 1000-grain weight, and protein content in grain. We distinguished accessions with high adaptability and high yield capacity: „Doridnyy‟, „Svarozhych‟, „Amator‟, „Sontsedar‟, „Sovira‟, „Hermes‟, „Soka‟ (UKR); „Tonus‟ (RUS) giving 592 - 640 g/m2, which is by 6% - 14% more than for standard „Vzіrets‟. We also selected standards of various expression levels of 1000-grain weight: medium (40.1-45.0 g) – variety „Variant‟ (UKR); high (45.1-50.0 g) – „Vyklyk‟ (UKR); very high (> 50.0 g) – „Vodohrai‟ (UKR). Analysis of spring barley for protein content in grain revealed differentiation of values: low, medium and very high values, which ranged from 10.7% to 19.3%. Very high protein content of > 17.1% was recorded in naked barley accessions „Akhіles‟ (18.0%), „Hatunok‟ (17.2%) (UKR), and CDC Alamo (19.3%) (CAN). We analyzed spring barley productivity. We also analyzed the following structure components: spike length, spikelet and grain numbers per spike, grain weight per spike. On average the spike length ranged from 6.8 cm (variety „Biom‟, RUS, 2012) to 17.1 cm (variety „Dzherelo‟, UKR, 2014) during the study years. The grain number per spike is one of the most important components of plant productivity and is essential for breeding. The grain number per spike was in the range of 14 to 44. Varieties „Vzіrets‟, „Dzherelo‟ (UKR), „Vladimir‟, „Veresk‟ (RUS) were noticeable for the high grain numbers per spike of 24, 27, 27, 26, respectively. High grain weight per spike was observed in varieties „Dzherelo‟ (1.74 g), „Ilek 9‟ (1.59 g), „Volodar‟ (1.39 g) (UKR); „Veresk‟ (1.40 g), and „Vladimir‟ (1.55 g) (RUS).Conclusions. The analysis selected varieties combining quality features necessary for groat barley (high yield capacity, protein content of > 14%, 1000-grain weight of > 48 g): „Doridnyy‟, „Svarozhych‟, „Sontsedar‟, „Soka‟, „Vodohrai‟ (UKR).
