COLLECTION FORMATION AND USE

Abstract

Goal. The goal was search and introduction of new gene pool accessions with subsequent studying them in terms of a set of valuable economic traits; creation of working, trait and other collections, development of passport and trait databases of the gene pool; preservation of gene pool accessions in the viable state; provision of plant-breeding and research organizations as well as educational establishments with genetic diversity accessions and information about the gene pool of bast crops.Materials and Methods. The study was carried in the fields of the Research Station of Bast Crops of the Institute of Agriculture of the North-East of NААS in the Departments of Flax and Hemp Breeding and Seed Production in 1992-2015 Field accounts and laboratory tests were conducted by conventional methods of field and laboratory studies of bast crops.Results and Discussion. The work on forming collections of bast crops was started in 1992. The 24-year research of genetic resources resulted in formation of Ukrainian national collections of flax and hemp including 1348 and 490 accessions, respectively. The flax collection contains 942 accessions of fiber flax, 233 accessions of intermediate flax, 48 accessions of linseed flax, and 22 accessions of species. The hemp collection is presented by two bioforms (172 monoecious and 318 dioecious accessions) and three types (northern, middle-Russian and southern). Two basic, 5 trait and 5 working collections of bast crops, and 9 valuable accessions of fiber flax and hemp are registered with the NCPGRU. Eight varieties of fiber flax and 11 varieties of monoecious hemp were created and registered with the State Register. Passport databases for 1,157 flax accessions, 490 hemp accessions were generated; a database of morphological traits for 557 flax accessions was created. On the basis of these results, methodical guidelines for studies of flax and hemp collections were developed. The study results on collection accessions are summarized in 11 catalogues and 2 classifiers.Conclusions. As a result of the research, the flax and hemp collections were formed and registered, and the genetic diversity of flax and hemp accessions was comprehensively investigated. These trait and working collections allow wider and more efficient using the diversity of bast crops in different breeding directions.
