Abstract

Goal. Maintaining and expanding collections of new minor subtropical fruit crops, ornamental trees and shrubs, aromatic and medicinal plants in the State Enterprise "Experimental farm Novokakhovskoye." Based on these collections, new varieties and forms, which will significantly expand the assortment of plants both for botanical gardens, farms and for home gardens, are created.

Results and Discussion. The results of multi-year work at creating unique collections of ornamental trees and shrubs, aromatic and medicinal plants as well as new minor subtropical fruit crops in the State Enterprise "Experimental farm Novokakhovskoye" are covered. For 20 years, new ornamental plants with high decorative qualities have been introduced; the prospectivity of these plants in the Southern Steppe has been assessed. The Nikitsky Botanical Gardens were the main source of introduced species. Form that are more resistant to unfavorable conditions of the Southern Steppe were created in the collection of ornamental trees and shrubs. Studying the major economically valuable traits of introduced odoriferous plants, we found that hyssop, thyme, and others gave  by 25% higher yields of flower raw material as compared to the Nikitsky Gardens; and the weight percentage of essential oil in some thyme accessions grown in the Kherson region was rather high (0.79% of wet weight). As to the content of the major ingredient of essential oil (linalyl acetate), some Lavandula accessions exceeded those grown in the Nikitsky Gardens. The climatic conditions in the Kherson region are also favorable for growing new minor fruit crops, such as jujube, persimmon and pawpaw, which have been considered as not traditional for our country. These crops are valuable as a source of food, medicinal and ornamental properties. Plants are not damaged by pests or diseases, have all phases of seasonal development, set fruits, which reach full maturity. Historical background on origin of some crops from the collection is given.

Conclusions. The exploratory studies in the State Enterprise "Experimental farm Novokakhovskoye" resulted in unique collections of new minor subtropical fruit crops, ornamental, aromatic and medicinal plants. After the annexation of the Crimea, the State Enterprise "Experimental farm" Novokakhovskoye" is the biggest scientific institution studying of the above-mentioned crops in Ukraine. The primary task of the scientists is expansion and maintenance of collections of the farm that are unique and exclusive in Ukraine.
