AUGMENTATION OF THE SUNFLOWER GENE POOL IN TERMS IF RESISTANCE TO DISEASES

Abstract

Goal. Investigation of sunflower varieties and lines of the gene pool collection of the National Center of Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine; identification of sources of resistance to the most common diseases in the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine in order to form working and trait collections.

            Results and Discussion. The article presents the study results on collection sunflower accessions for resistance to downy mildew on provocative background and in the laboratory conditions, using an express method of evaluation, in 2011-2015. We distinguished sources of individual resistance to Phomopsis (varieties ‘Abendsonne’, ‘Chkalovskiy Gigant’, ‘Saratovskiy 82’ and two lines RHA 113, PM 17), as well as sources of resistance to downy mildew (varieties ‘Malianka 1’, ‘Mistsevyy 10’, ‘Nadiozhnyy’, ‘Peresvet’, ‘Spartak’, ‘Kharkovskiy Skorospelyy’). Standards for the full range of the trait “resistance to these two pathogens” were selected both among varieties and among lines. Nineteen sunflower lines were created; eight of them, which combine group resistance to diseases with valuable economic traits, were registered. Based on these lines (BI 26 V, BI 198 V, BI 6 V, BI 7 V, Bi 8 V, BI 10 V, BI 36 V, BI 51 V (registration certificates 1051, 1052 dd 25/02/2013, 1159-1162 dd 31/01/2014, 1170, 1171 dd 11/02/2014), a working collection of sunflower accessions with group resistance to downy mildew and Phomopsis was formed.

            Conclusions. The study of collection sunflower accessions in 2011-2015 identified sources of individual and group resistance to pathogens. We defined 20 standards for the expression range of resistance to six pathogens. Eight sunflower lines combining group resistance to Phomopsis and downy mildew pathogens with valuable economic traits were created and registered. We formed and registered: a working collection of sunflower lines with group resistance to Phomopsis and downy mildew and a trait sunflower collection by resistance to diseases. The sunflower collections and lines created are recommended to use in research institutions of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine in order to provide heterosis sunflower breeding programs with disease resistance sources.
