SCIENCE BACKGROUND OF CREATION OF TRAIT COLLECTION OF THE KIDNEY BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.)

Abstract

Goal. Isolation of the initial material for support of the innovations of our breeding and creation of kidney bean trait collection.

Results and discussion. Based on the base collection of Phaseolus L., a trait collection of Phaseolus vulgaris L., which as of 10.01.2014 included 413 samples from 86 countries, was formed in the Laboratory of Genetic Resources of Pulse and Groat Crops of NCPGRU over the period of 1993 - 2013. The collection covers 31 traits by 151 levels of their expression. Seed yield, yield of green beans in the phase of pod development for beans intended for vegetable use, suitability for mechanized harvesting (bush shape, lodging resistance exceeding the average level, high-located lower tier of pods ≥10 cm above ground level), drought tolerance, individual resistance to diseases (bacterial spots, bacterial wilts, Fusarium, viruses) and group resistance were taken as a basis. Samples included in the collection were characterized by the following features (in addition to the major ones): purpose of use, growing season duration, growth type, plant shape, 1000-seed weight, protein content in ripe seeds, time rate of seed cooking, seed coat color; separately for samples intended for vegetable use: quality of beans in the phase of pod development (presence of fibers and fibrous layer in the shell), color of beans in the phase of pod development, shape of cross-section of beans in the phase of pod development.

Conclusions. The bean trait collection can fully provide domestic breeding programs with source material for the creation of high-tech high-yielding bean varieties both for grain and vegetable areas of use, adapted to the conditions of the Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine, with high taste and nutritional properties.
