Abstract

Goal. Formation of beet genetic diversity bank is aimed at provision of breeding works, academic programs with starting material as well as preserving it for present and future generations.Results and discussion. The article presents a methodology and results on the collection formation and study of beet samples. The national collection of beets at the Institute of Bioenergy Crops and Sugar Beet NAAS of Ukraine numbers 377 samples, including 233 of sugar beet, 65 fodder beet, 12 table beet and 67 wild beet of various ploidy. The collection is ordered according to valuable basic economic characteristics, such as shape and colour of root, heteroploidy, yield, sugar content, combination ability, dry matter content, technological quality, resistance to diseases, cold and drought, etc. Highlighted are samples and sources feature economic and biological traits. To the National Centre for Plant Genetic Resources of Ukraine transmitted were 318 passported collection samples.Conclusions. The collection of sugar, fodder and wild beet samples ordered on complex economic and biological characteristics is a valuable source for the creation of new hybrids and varieties of sugar beet under breeding programs.
