Abstract

The main results of the work on gene pool formation and the work with plant resources in Belarus are presented in the paper. As a result of the implementation of "Gene Pool" State program, for the period of 2000-2011, in the country, the genetic fund of cultivated plants was formed. Work collections of breeding research institutions of the republic were the basis for the formation of the National Gene Pool. The volume of the National Gene Pool of economic plantsis more than 33 thousand samples. The bank of genetic collections of Belarus ranked 5th in the number of collection samples among the CIS countries, and in species diversity, it is on the 3rd place and accounts 1680 cultivated species and their relatives. In the implementation of the State program "Gene Pool", 11 research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and two institutes of higher education take part. The vault of the National Gene Pool has the conditions for reliable long-term storage of genetic collections of economic plants. Coordination of the research conduction in the field of plant genetic resources is exercised by the Board of Genetic Resources of Economic Plants of Belarus. Work on the expansion of international contacts with leading breeding centers and gene banks is carried out. The republic joined ECPGR and AEGIS, gene pool exchange has been arranged. For the period of 2000-2011, in the Republic of Belarus, 480 varieties were developed on the basis of the use of plant genetic resources. In the Research and Practical Centre of NAS of Belarus, varieties of winter and spring triticale, and other crops have been developed using collection samples of Ukrainian origin.
